New Direction for Survive & Thrive@ The Library

What’s the latest on Survive & Thrive @ the Library? We’ve been out in the community conducting surveys among employers, job seekers, and other related groups to determine the next round of programming we need to offer.

In recent months we have branched out and offered programs on home foreclosure, bargain shopping and putting together workable household budgets (to name a few). Our goal is to continue to offer programs that will not only benefit anyone looking for a job, or a different job, but also to offer programs that are important to finding a job such as budgeting, bargain shopping and the like.

Job searching can be daunting enough without having to worry about other things in your life indirectly related to your job search. That’s the focus of Survive & Thrive @ the Library, to offer programs that will stabilize those other parts of your home life so that they will not become a distraction to your job seeking efforts.

Triad Job Search Network

Triad Job Search Network offers weekly workshops and networking opportunities each Wednesday from 12:00 to 2:00pm at the Maple Springs United Methodist Church in the Focus Classroom (#26). The address is 2569 Reynolda Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27106.

“Triad Job Search Network (TJSN) is a nonprofit organization providing education and support for unemployed and under-employed professionals through services designed to facilitate and enhance networking and other job search skills. Our Goal is to shorten each member’s transition to appropriate new employment. TJSN provides services to members from nearly all professions. Our programs help you deal with the job search.”

2 Job Seekers’ Groups

Ardmore United Methodist Church located at 630 S. Hawthorne Road; Winston-Salem 27103 have started a bi-weekly job seeker’s support group. The group starts at 6:30pm and offers childcare. For more information contact 723-3695.

Professionals in Transition also offers a Thursday job seeker’s networking group on Thursday evenings from 7-8:30pm at the American Red Cross Building located at 690 Coliseum Drive, Winston-Salem 27106. For more information on PIT, go to www.jobsearching.org.

Information on Green Jobs at the Earth Day Fair

Come to the Earth Day Fair at Wake Forest University on April 17th, and learn about green jobs.

The Piedmont Earth Day Fair will feature exhibitors that can lend a hand if you are looking for a green job. You can find out what exactly is a green job, where to look, and how to get one. Piedmont Environmental Alliance will also have information to share at their Green Jobs booth.

Visit this special area to get the latest information on green jobs available now and in the future. Find out how the skills you have may prepare you for the green-collar economy. Learn about green job education opportunities in NC. See what NC is doing to provide and promote green employment.

Talk to vendors at the fair about their green jobs. If you are looking for an environmentally friendly career or just trying to make your own workplace a greener space, then come to the fair and learn about the growing green workforce.

Writing a business plan

Our last Survive & Thrive session on February 8th and our next session on February 15th focuses on entrepeneurs and how you can start your own business. One of the most important tools you will need in the process of creating a business is a business plan, which can help you work out the details of setting up and running a successful venture. The library offers many tools for helping you create a business plan, including books and access to e-books online. Another great tool is the business plan workbook linked from the Northwest Piedmont Council of Governments, which can walk you through each step of the process.
